What is
UX Auditing
?
A UX (User Experience) audit is a detailed evaluation conducted on an existing website to identify usability, functionality, and effectiveness improvements. We often recommend a UX audit as a starting point to highlight potential pain points or areas for improvement. During the audit, we measure the website’s performance against a set of heuristic evaluation principles, which focus on usability best practices and how users interact with the site. A UX audit offers invaluable insights into how your website is currently performing and outlines areas for improvement, allowing you to improve the overall experience of the site. Once the audit is complete, we’ll provide actionable recommendations, which can be implemented either by our team or by your preferred internal or external developers. Many aspects of a successful website rely on understanding human psychology, such as reducing cognitive overload and ensuring the user interface (UI) is intuitive and easy to navigate. While visual appeal matters, an effective website is much more about how seamlessly it functions and how well it converts visitors into customers.

UX Auditing

FAQs

How long does a UX audit take?
The duration of a UX audit varies depending on the number of pages included and the complexity of the website. On average, a UX audit takes around 2 to 3 weeks to complete. However, for websites with extensive functionality or intricate user journeys, the process may take longer to ensure every aspect is thoroughly assessed. We’ll always provide a clear timeline upfront so you know what to expect.
Will you give me a report or action plan after the audit?
Yes, absolutely. Once the UX audit is completed, we’ll deliver a detailed report accompanied by a clear action plan. This plan will outline the recommended updates and improvements categorised using a P0–P4 prioritisation system. P0 relates to critical changes that require immediate attention, while P4 represents low-priority enhancements. This prioritisation is similar to a traffic light system and is designed to be easily understood by everyone, regardless of their technical expertise. We take care to explain all recommendations in straightforward terms, ensuring the entire team, from developers to non-technical stakeholders, can digest and act upon the findings.
Do I need a UX audit even if my website looks good?
Yes, most websites can benefit from a UX audit, regardless of how visually appealing they appear. While your website may look good, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s performing optimally in terms of usability or conversions. Visual aesthetics and functionality are two very distinct individual factors. A great looking website can still frustrate users if it’s hard to navigate or slow to load. Additionally, whether a website "looks good" is subjective, whereas usability is measurable and based on data. To ensure maximum engagement and conversions, we often recommend using AI tools like Optimise to test different design and functionality variants for personalised user experiences. By tailoring the website to each visitor’s needs, you can achieve higher satisfaction and conversion rates. You can learn more about our AI optimisation service here.
Will a UX audit help increase my sales or conversions?
Yes, that’s one of the primary goals of a UX audit. By identifying and addressing usability issues, a UX audit helps improve the overall user experience, which in turn increases sales, leads, or other desired actions on your website. While specific objectives can vary, for example, reducing checkout drop-offs, boosting time spent on a page, or improving engagement metrics, most businesses aim to optimise conversions in one way or another. The audit provides actionable insights to align your website’s performance with your business goals, ensuring that visitors have a seamless and intuitive experience that encourages them to take the actions you value most.
What tools or methods do you use during a UX audit?
We rely on a combination of methodologies and tools to carry out a comprehensive UX audit. A core part of our process involves heuristic evaluation principles, which assess the usability of websites and interfaces against established UX laws. Depending on the website’s needs, we might also use prioritisation methods such as the MoSCoW framework (Must, Should, Could, Won’t), the RICE scoring model (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort), or a feasibility, desirability, and viability scorecard. These frameworks help us systematically evaluate your website and prioritise recommendations. For documentation and collaboration, we typically use shared Google Docs. To streamline evaluations, we may also utilise tools like Heurio.co, Heurix.io and HotJar.com, which provide additional insights into user behavior and usability challenges. The choice of tools and methods depends on your website’s UX maturity and the goals of the audit.
Do I have to implement all the changes you suggest?
No, implementing the suggested changes is entirely your choice. A UX audit provides detailed recommendations, but how you act on them is up to you. We offer development services to help implement the changes if you decide to proceed with our team. Alternatively, you can share the audit, along with the prioritisation matrix, with your internal developers or an external team you already work with. The prioritisation system ensures you can tackle updates at your own pace, focusing on the most critical changes first to ensure the highest impact.
How do I know if my website needs a UX audit?
The truth is that most websites would benefit from a UX audit in some way. Technology evolves rapidly, and what was considered user-friendly 2-3 years ago may now face usability issues as new UX principles and technologies emerge. So in short, if you suspect your website might benefit from a UX audit, the chances are it probably will! An audit is particularly valuable if you’re experiencing high bounce rates, low conversions, or receiving feedback about navigation difficulties from users. Even if your site appears to function well, an audit can reveal hidden inefficiencies or untapped opportunities for page speed improvement. Think of it as a comprehensive health check for your website, ensuring everything runs smoothly whilst also pinpointing key areas to enhance the overall user experience and usability too.
